The "Freedom Lights", installed in 1956 were four beacons, each five feet in diameter and weighing one ton, that were placed 1,095 feet above the streets and which symbolized a welcome to the country and the hope for peace. Revolving in perfect synchronization, one revolution per minute, these lights generated 45 million candle power and could be seen from as far away as 300 miles from the air and 80 miles from the ground.
